Sacred places of Teme-Augama (Temagami) Anishnabai

Evidence shown in Bear island Foundation vs Attorney General for Ontario trial

Ishpatina Ridge

A FOLKTALE TELLS HOW THE TRICKSTER GIANT NENEBUC SHOT A HUGE SNAKE THAT TRANSFORMED INTO A RIDGE NEAR SMOOTHWATER LAKE.

Lion Queen's Cave

EVERY INDIAN TRIBE HAS AN ORIGIN LEGEND BASED ON THEIR FIRST APPEARANCE ON EARTH. THE TEMAGAMI CLAIM THAT FAR BACK IN THE MISTS OF TIME, THEIR ANCESTORS SPRANG FROM A CAVE LOCATED IN THE SMOOTHWATER LAKE AREA.

Maple Mountain

chi bai gin

A SACRED MOUNTAIN EXISTS IN MOST ALGONKIAN BAND TERRITORIES. THE TEMAGAMI INDIANS HOLD MAPLE MOUNTAIN AS THE RESTING PLACE OF THEIR ANCESTORS' SPIRITS.

High Rock Island Hill

High rock island

THE TOP OF HIGH ROCK ISLAND OFFERS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL VIEWS OF LAKE TEMAGAMI. THERE ARE SUGGESTIONS THAT THIS WAS A PLACE USED FOR VISION QUESTS.

Seal Island Cave

A NATURAL ROCK CAVE LEADS FROM THE LAKE INTO SEAL ISLAND. ELF-LIKE PEOPLE, THE MAYMAYGWASHI, WERE OFTEN SEEN HERE IN THEIR STONE CANOES. AN OLD FOLKTALE IS ASSOCIATED WITH SEAL ISLAND.

Split Rock

AN ISLAND ACROSS THE CHANNEL FROM SEAL ROCK ALSO HAS A ROLE IN THE SEAL CAVE STORY. A HUGE ROCK IS SPLIT DOWN THE CENTRE ON THE SHORE OF THIS ISLAND. A MAGIC SEAL HAD STOLEN A TEMAGAMI SHIELD AND THE FATHER USED SPIRIT POWERS TO CHASE THE THIEF. HE SPLIT THE ROCK IN HIS SEARCH.

Nokomis Rocks

nokomis rocks

ANOTHER SET OF ROCKS IS KNOWN AS A "GRANDMOTHER" FORMATION. LOCATED ON OBABIKA LAKE, LOCAL INDIAN TRAPPERS LEFT OFFERINGS AT THIS SPOT.

Grandmother Rock Site

AN UNUSUAL ROCK STOOD NEAR GRANNY ISLAND IN THE NORTH ARM OF LAKE TEMAGAMI. IT WAS A SITE ASSOCIATED WITH TEMAGAMI FOLKLORE AND A LOCAL SHRINE WHERE TOBACCO OFFERINGS WERE LEFT FOR GOOD FORTUNE.

Hanging Rock

Spirit Rock

AN IMPRESSIVE HANGING ROCK SLAB IS FOUND ON A REMOTE LAKE NORTH OF OBABIKA LAKE.

THIS ROCK, "CHISKONABICKONG", IS ONE OF MANY SPECIAL PLACES IN THE LAND.

VOICES COULD BE HEARD COMING OUT OF THE ROCK.

A SECRET CEREMONIAL AREA IS THOUGHT TO BE LOCATED NEARBY.
